A floor plan is a scaled representation of a room or building as seen from above. The floor plan may illustrate a complete building, one floor of a building, or a single room. It may also include dimensions, furnishings, equipment, or whatever relevant to the plan's goal. Floor plans can be used to assist in the design of furniture layout, electrical connections, and much more.
What should you look for in a decent floor plan while designing your home?
Versatile and adaptable: Make sure that an area can be readily converted into a another room in the future, whether for your family or a future buyer.
Ideal Room Layout: Make sure bedrooms are separated from living areas. Bathrooms should not be located near common leisure areas such as dining rooms or living rooms. Most people prefer it if the kitchen is open to the dining or living areas, allowing the cook to engage with visitors or keep an eye on the kids playing.
Your Floor Plan should reflect your needs: Fits your priorities and way of life. If entertaining is crucial, make sure there is a smooth transition from the kitchen to an outside space and living room. If you work from home, make sure your office has good lighting and is in a quiet area.
Drawing a Floor Plan
Area Selection: Determine the drawing area. If the structure already exists, determine how much of it to sketch (a room, a storey, or the full structure). If the structure is yet to exist, explore designs based on the size and shape of the site.
Taking Measurements: Measure the walls, doors, and relevant furniture if the structure exists so that the floor layout is accurate. If the layout is for a completely new area, make sure that the overall area will fit where it is to be built. It is best to look at houses in similar locations to get an approximation for this floor layout.
Drawing walls and adding interior elements: Add walls to each building room, taking care to draw them to scale. Begin by including the immovables, such as the doors and windows, as well as the refrigerator, dishwasher, dryer and furniture that must be placed in a certain spot.
